Music

At Wheelers Lane Primary, we believe that Music is a powerful and unique form of communication that can change the way people feel, think and act. Music enables creative expression, reflection and emotional development. It equips pupils with the confidence and creative tools to understand themselves, relate to others and appreciate the world around them.
Music and music-making is an essential part of every child’s education and integral to the life of our school and the wider community. At WLPS, Music is for all, regardless of ability. We set high expectations for all learners and pitch learning at a deliberately ambitious level. Barriers for pupils with SEND are assessed, addressed and within subsequent lessons. Opportunities to share and celebrate our musical achievements within our school and the wider community are embedded within our curriculum. Our Music curriculum is designed not only to develop children’s musicianship, (the mastery of musical appreciation, performance, knowledge and skills), but also to contribute to each child’s life journey by enriching and enhancing their experience and understanding of the world.

At Wheelers Lane Primary, our Music curriculum is based on the National Curriculum and we ensure progression throughout the school by following the Charanga Musical School Scheme. This makes sure that knowledge and progression is built on prior learning and that there is full music coverage across all year groups. The Charanga Scheme will also ensure children are exposed to a variety of musical and artists from around the world. The Model Music Curriculum (MMC) is embedded within the units of work taught and additional opportunities for singing, listening to a wide range of music and performing have been created outside of the set curriculum to further develop the children’s musicianship.
During Year 4, all pupils will also have the opportunity to learn an instrument, supported by professional music teachers from Birmingham Music Services as part of the Wider opportunities offered within the curriculum.

Each class will have a large class 'floor' book. Each page in the floor book will showcase work that has been completed in the lesson showing the skills that children have been taught and how they have applied these skills independently and in ensembles; this may be photos, compositions, evaluations or any other aspects of the topic that has been covered. In addition, any photos will be stored in the Music folder (online).

The purpose of this is that the teacher that next teaches the same aspect will be able to show these to the children hence building their memory of what they have learned and produced in Music lessons.
