Sustainability

Well-Being Garden

Our whole School approach, with the UNESCO Global Goals at its centre, enables learning for sustainability to be embedded with outdoor learning at its core to support our national curriculum. We want to equip our pupils with the values, attitudes, knowledge, skills and confidence to act and make decisions which are compatible with a sustainable society and contribute effectively to the common good.
Learners will understand the significance of their choices, now and in the future and their responsible use of our planet's resources, developing a sense of belonging to their local, national and global community, with a deep connection to the natural world.

Our School Mascot
Meet the Eco Warriors
At Wheelers Lane we ask each class from Reception to Year 6 to carry out a democratic vote to determine which member will become the class Eco Warrior. These children have to present their reasons for why it is important to them and how they might make a difference.
There are 21 members of our Eco Warrior team and we meet fortnightly to work on our action plan set out in September. Everything we work to accomplish is guided by the 17 Global Goals. This year we have begun working towards the ‘Uk Climate Change; Let’s Go Zero’ campaign with our aim to become as close to zero carbon as possible.
Global Goals
The 17 Global Goals are a plan agreed to by all world leaders to build a greener, fairer, better world by 2030, and we all have a role in achieving them. At Wheelers Lane Primary we use the global goals to help set up our action plan and decide what our focus will be over the year.
The Ripple
Coming soon!
The Eco Warriors were given the opportunity to make a film to be entered into the ‘Take Action’ category at the London Film Awards 2026. The team sprung into action and were very excited to take on this challenge. During the planning process the decision was made to create a story around the Birmingham Bin Strikes and a ‘what if’ look into our future world. The children lead the way and helped plan and write the story, film all the parts, source and supply props and some were very keen to be in front of the camera. As many of them had never done anything like this before we learnt quickly on the job especially when it came to filming from different angles and deciding on the camera shots. The finished film was entitled ‘The Ripple’. We had a special showing in assembly and received lots of wonderful feedback. All of the Eco Warriors should be very proud of themselves, they did an amazing job. Well Done!
A special thanks to Mrs Pearson, Mrs Tipler, Mr Dunn and Mr Byron who helped the children to write, produce and edit the film.
What have the Eco Warriors been up to?
- We have set up our litter picking rota. Every class in school will have the litter pickers for a week to make sure our school and surrounding areas are kept clean and tidy. The children did a fantastic job to start us off, cleaning up and making sure our rubbish bins were in the appropriate places.
- The Eco warriors have been busy making bird feeders. Birds need high energy, high fat foods during cold weather and it helps if they can find their food easily. We made eco friendly, hanging shape bird feeders to place around our school grounds.
- Recently the Eco Warriors took part in the Big Schools Birdwatch for the RSPB. We went out onto our school playground to see which birds visited us. We spotted Magpies, Crows, pidgeons and Gulls.
- This year we celebrated 20 years of Earth Hour. Two decades of collection action raising awareness of climate change and nature loss. 118 countries all around the world switched off their lights and electricity for 1 hour.
In school we have our very own Earth Hour on Thursday 26th March. We used this opportunity to reconnect with nature. We turned off all of our lights and computers for 1 hour and spent time outdoors and doing other creative activities, giving ourselves the time to reflect.
